Head of Maths

Salary: £42,000 per annum

Location: This role is based across our Tonbridge and Hadlow campuses, although there may be a requirement to travel to other College sites as required.

Here at North Kent College, we have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Maths to join our busy Maths department working across our Tonbridge campus which currently has 330 enrolled students on our Maths qualifications and Hadlow campus which has 230 students following a Maths qualification as part of their vocational programme. The suitable applicant will join the College from September 2023.

This position is both a teaching and leadership role, where you will be teaching students for up to 600 hours per year at our Functional Skills and Foundation GCSE levels, as well as leading four Maths teachers and working alongside both our Head of English and Assistant Principal – Maths & English to contribute to the strategic direction and daily management of our Maths & English departments.

At NKC, we are very proud of our achievements within the Maths and English department, with our students achieving Maths GCSE and Functional Skills above the national average for the FE sector, in addition to high additional attendance through our continued support from the vocational curriculum areas.

This role is a full-time role over 52 weeks per annum, in return we’ll give you 42 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, and you’ll be enrolled onto the Teachers’ Pension Scheme which also includes life assurance. You’ll also benefit from free parking and have access to a range of onsite facilities including a nursery (Dartford and Gravesend campuses), restaurants and coffee shops.

We have had several teachers move from the secondary to FE phase and for any prospective candidates considering this, we have listed some implications of this transition which you may like to use as a consideration.

Implications of moving from secondary to FE

  • No tutor group
  • No duties
  • No parent evenings
  • Class sizes are usually no more than 20
  • Repeat delivery of lessons with only minor changes based on learner needs and backgrounds, so planning is manageable
  • Functional Skills is just a smaller subset of GCSE (e.g., no algebra)
  • Functional Skills learners have up to 3 opportunities to take the exam
  • Greater opportunity for CPD sessions during non-teaching weeks
  • Continuing/no change to expectations
  • Plan and deliver high quality lessons
  • Lesson observations annually
  • Use of a classroom base and office
  • Continuation of the Teacher Pension scheme
  • Learners complete regular assessments to track progress
  • A written report or each learner twice a year


  • We have a strong focus on attendance as well as achievement
  • Each learner receives a 2-hour Maths session for approximately 32 weeks
  • Slightly longer days (start at 8:45am, finish at 5:15pm) but over a shorter delivery time (ie teaching starts approx. 2nd week in Sept and ends in June).
  • Delivery is to learners aged 16+ (the vast majority are 16-18)
  • Less holidays than at school, but greater flexibility in booking them outside teaching term dates (there are approximately 9 weeks of holiday available)., some pre-allocated as Bank Holidays).
  • Earlier return than schools – usually 3rd week in August.
